Why choose a natural deodorant?
5 reasons to use a natural deodorant instead of an anti-perspirant
What are the benefits of switching to a natural deodorant? Is a deodorant better for you than an antiperspirant? Have you ever wondered how these work and whether all the ingredients in it are good for you? In the following paragraphs, we will explain to you why and how we sweat and what are the reasons for switching to a natural deodorant.
What is sweat and why does our body needs it?
Our skin is thought to contain over 2.5 million sweat glands on its surface. Sweat is one of our essential physiological functions. It regulates our body temperature, responds to stress and ”up to 30% of bodily waste is excreted through perspiration from…tiny pores in the human skin.” (1) We can divide these sweat glands into 2 categories: eccrine glands (present at birth and covering the whole surface of our body) and apocrine glands (dormant until puberty and can be found on several parts of the body such as armpits)
Eccrine glands: “ are dependent on diet, hydration, metabolic rate, state of health, drug administration, and body area.”(2) These components are composed primarily of water but also small amounts of minerals (such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium), metabolites (such as lactate, ammonia, and urea), and unmetabolized pharmaceutical drugs.
Apocrine glands: “oily, odorless substance consisting of proteins, lipids, and steroids, but contains the same minerals and metabolites.”(3) These glands are responsible for pheromones.
1. Sweating is healthy
The above mentioned eccrine and apocrine sweat glands have an essential function for our body whether it is the regulation of our body temperature or getting rid of toxins. If you decide to use an antitranspirant to block these fonctions your pores may get clogged. As a result your skin may be more prone to pimples, boils, overgrowth of certain types of bacteria on your armpit area and overall irritation of this area. Thus, using a deodorant is a safer choice than using an antiperspirant.
2. You avoid toxic ingredients getting into your body
While using a natural deodorant you not only avoid your pores getting clogged but you stay away from more toxic ingredients that might be potentially very harmful to your health. One one hand, if you apply a product with harmful ingredients on your armpits your sweat might actually protect you from absorption of these toxins. On the other hand if less or no sweat is present, ingredients in the product you apply might get faster directly to your dermis through your sweat glands than on other parts of your body. Aluminum, parabens or artificial fragrances might act as endocrine disruptors especially in women’s bodies. This is why it is crucial to choose a product for this bodily area with a clean composition.

3. Natural deodorants work
Some people might be a bit more skeptical when it comes to natural deodorants and its effectiveness. Sweat, however, doesn’t have a bad odour on its own. What we do smell is the underarm bacteria decomposed by sweat. Luckily there are naturally occurring ingredients such as magnesium that prevents the decomposition of bacteria or zinc derived from castor oil that traps and absorbs odour molecules. These natural ingredients won’t clog your pores but will keep you smelling fresh during the whole day!
4. Avoid artificial fragrances
You might not only want to avoid toxic ingredients that will clog your pores or parabens that have been found to have estrogen activity in our bodies but also artificial perfumes.(4) Artificial fragrances can cause skin irritation(5) and “many synthetic chemicals in fragrances are petroleum-based and can be harmful to human health. Chemicals found in fragrances include phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, and carcinogens benzophenone and styrene.”(6) You might want to choose a product which contains a blend of naturally derived scents such as essential oils.(7)
5. Support brands that are kind to the planet and to animals
If a company has a focus on natural ingredients that are good for your skin, more than often, the journey doesn’t stop there. At MIKLØ.bodycare, we wanted to create effective and natural products that will be adapted to sensitive skin. Additionally, we choose plastic-free packaging, local & handmade production and 100% vegan composition. We created fresh scents that can be used by anyone regardless of their gender.
Are you convinced about the effectiveness and benefits of natural deodorants or still having some doubts? Choosing a product with natural ingredients is not only good for you but also for the planet. Everything we spray in the air or shower off has an impact on wastewater and air quality. A vegan composition protects animals from being part of the beauty industry. Plus a local production saves important amounts of energy from transportation.
